As Bangladesh welcomes Pohela Boishakh ১৪৩২, the Bengali New Year, we at Doggyman Bangladesh extend our heartfelt greetings to everyone across the country and around the world. শুভ নববর্ষ!
What is Pohela Boishakh?
Pohela Boishakh (পহেলা বৈশাখ), the first day of the Bengali calendar, is one of the most widely celebrated cultural festivals in Bangladesh. The name comes from "Pohela" meaning "first" and "Boishakh", the first month in the Bengali year.

When did Pohela Boishakh start?
The Bengali calendar was introduced during the Mughal era, under the reign of Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. The goal was to create a calendar that aligned with the agricultural cycle and tax collection. Over time, the date took on cultural and national significance and evolved into a day of unity and celebration.
How Do People Celebrate?
Pohela Boishakh is celebrated with:
🎨 Mongol Shobhajatra – colorful processions organized by students and artists, especially at Dhaka University
🖌️ Alpona decorations – traditional floor art with floral motifs
🍚 Traditional food – Panta Ilish (fermented rice with fried hilsa fish), sweets, and local snacks
👚 Red & white outfits – symbolizing purity, hope, and joy
🎶 Folk songs and dance – performances of Rabindra Sangeet and Baul music
🏠 Clean home and new beginnings – many businesses also open a new ledger, called Haal Khata.
